Real Numbers

Primes as the building blocks of every whole number 5 sessions · Class 10 Maths · Real numbers

1.1 Every number is built from primes Every composite number is a product of primes in exactly one way, apart from order. 1.2 HCF and LCM from primes The HCF is the shared primes at their smaller powers; the LCM is all the primes at their larger powers. 1.3 The product rule, and reading factorisations For two numbers, HCF × LCM equals their product. Prime factorisations decide divisibility questions for every case at once. 1.4 What primes tell you about a fraction A fraction in lowest terms terminates exactly when its denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. 1.5 Proving a number is irrational Assume √2 is a fraction in lowest terms and show both parts are even: proof by contradiction.
